The Best Movies in Summer — A Brand That Shines Beyond the Screen: As Germany’s second-largest film festival, Filmfest München holds a unique place in the country’s cultural scene. Unlike its winter counterpart in Berlin, it celebrates cinema in summer — open, warm, and made for everyone. When new leadership took over, the festival needed more than just a visual update. It needed a brand that captured its new direction and its spirit as a true audience festival.

Over more than a decade of collaboration (2011 to 2022), we guided Filmfest München through a radical rebranding and the ongoing evolution of its visual communication. The guiding idea — “The Best Movies in Summer” — became both strategy and design principle. The recurring sunglasses motif works as a subtle yet unmistakable signature: a symbol of the audience in the summer sun, and at the same time a playful wink to the coolness of the stars on the red carpet. Each year, the theme of the sunglasses was reimagined in collaboration with some of the world’s most renowned illustrators, including Olimpia Zagnoli and others.

Consistent design language across all communication touchpoints

A strong typographic framework and cinematic imagery formed the foundation of a consistent yet flexible design system — one that evolves annually while keeping its distinct identity intact. Our work spanned the entire spectrum of brand and communication design: corporate design, annual campaigns, trailers, festival magazines, award design (with Steffen Kehrle and Zanzotti), on-site graphics, website, and social media assets.

The result is a distinctive, enduring identity that has turned Filmfest München from a quiet institution into one of the city’s most visible cultural brands — cinematic, confident, and full of summer light.
