Material +

Material+ at Neues Museum Nürnberg: Which new materials are needed today and in the future, and how can they be produced and used in a truly sustainable way? The design exhibition Material+ explored these questions through research projects, objects and speculative design concepts — presented at Neues Museum Nürnberg in collaboration with bayern design.

Across three thematic chapters — Research, Application and Speculation — the exhibition showcased how designers and researchers are shaping the material future. The focus extends far beyond the mere selection of substances: it investigates the entire life cycle, from extraction and production to use, reuse and return to the environment.

Examples included mycelium-based composites, algae-derived polymers, recycled textile fibres and experimental artefacts made from industrial waste. The exhibition positioned design as a mediator between science and society — a catalyst for innovation and awareness.

Together with MNiD and bayern design, we developed the exhibition design: a clear, modular and adaptive spatial system that placed the materials themselves at the centre of the narrative. The design harmonised seamlessly with the museum’s architecture by Staab Architekten, enhancing its open, flowing spatial character while subtly defining zones for orientation and focus. Through restrained scenography and precise information design, the exhibition invited reflection, curiosity and dialogue about how materials shape the world we live in — and the one we want to create.
